Duke University, Durham
Duke is a private college and maintains a highly selective admissions policy. About 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend eight major schools and colleges on two campuses. Duke is composed of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, the School of Law, the Sanford School of Public Policy, the Fuqua School of Business, the School of Forestry and Environment, and the Graduate School. Graduate programs are offered in the arts, sciences and engineering. Professional schools offer degrees in business, medicine, divinity, forestry, law and nursing. The Duke Medical Center serves as the teaching hospital for the Duke Medical School.

Durham Technical Community College, Durham
Durham Tech is a two-year institution providing vocational, occupational and technical training, adult basic education, high school diploma programs and personal interest subjects. It offers evening and weekend courses in 27 fields of study with 16 leading to an associate degree in applied science. Durham Tech provides new and expanding industries with customized skills training for specific jobs.

Meredith is the largest private college for women in the Southeast. Affiliated with the Baptist Church, Meredith offers degrees in arts and sciences, music and nursing, as well as master's degrees in Business Administration and Music.

North Carolina Central University, Durham
N.C. Central was the first four-year liberal arts institution for African Americans. In 1972, it became part of the consolidated University of North Carolina system and was fully integrated. Dynamic growth occurred with the development of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Law, the School of Library Science and the School of Business.

North Carolina State University, Raleigh
North Carolina State University is among the top universities for research in theoretical and applied science. With approximately 27,000 students, primarily from North Carolina, State is the largest of the educational institutions in the consolidated University of North Carolina system. The academic programs are organized into ten schools, with the largest enrollment in the Engineering program.

Shaw is the nation's oldest African-American four-year college. Twenty arts and science majors through 7 divisions are offered. Engineering is available through a cooperative arrangement at NC State University.

St. Augustine's is a predominately African-American Episcopalian college considered to be among the top five percent of four-year colleges for African Americans in the country. Bachelor's degrees in 33 subjects are offered including preprofessional fields.

St. Mary's College, Raleigh
Founded in 1842, St. Mary's is Raleigh's oldest college and it is the only Episcopal women's college in the nation. An unusual intermediate structure includes the last two years of high school and the first two years of college. Students earn both high school diplomas and associate degrees of arts.

Wake Technical Community College, Raleigh
Wake Tech was established in 1960 to serve students through a variety of vocational and technical courses. The courses lead to certification, a diploma or associate degrees. Wake offers programs in upgrading skills in computers, nursing and office administration. The college also provides customized skills training for specific jobs for new or expanding industries.
