Education Resources
As a family preparing to relocate, one of your primary concerns is the quality of the education provided by the local school system. Every parent wants to be assured that a transfer will not impede his or her child's education. But many parents are unsure how to evaluate a new school district. This page provides some questions to ask to help you gather a realistic portrait of the school environment and the type of education parents can expect their children to receive.
Questions to ask of potential schools:
- Budget: What has been the history of the school budget in the last five years? How does the per-pupil expenditure rank with neighboring communities, and with the state?

- Statistics: What is the average class size? What is the maximum class size? What percentage of graduates go on to four-year colleges and has this figure changed significantly over the past five years? What percentage of graduates enter post-secondary education? What are the mean SAT or ACT scores and how do they compare to national means? What percentage of the senior class took the SAT's and ACT's?

- College Attendance: What is the high school's track record in college admissions? How many graduates have been accepted at highly selective colleges, such as Ivy League schools? What percentage of the graduating class attends out-of-state colleges?

- Advanced Studies: What opportunities are available for exceptional students to pursue gifted and talented programs, and accelerated or advanced studies? Does the high school offer courses through a university for college credit? Does the high school offer advanced placement courses? If so, in what areas? How many seniors took advanced placement exams in the last graduating class?

- Handicapped: What programs are available to the handicapped student such as learning disabled, intellectually handicapped, or physically handicapped?

- Support Services: What support services are available in addition to the regular classroom administration staff? Check for services such as school psychologists, guidance counselors (and at which levels), speech and hearing clinicians, social workers, and remedial reading teachers.

- Enrichment Programs: How extensive are the course offerings in music, art and drama? Does the music department offer instruction in the stringed instruments? Are writing, reading, and computer courses coordinated in grades 7 through 12? To what extent is the district committed to a program on computer education?

- Accreditation: What is the accreditation status of the high school? Who accredited the school and for how many years?

- Graduation Requirements: What are the requirements for graduation from high school?

- Special Interest Areas: What are the opportunities available in sports and other extracurricular activities?
