Parks

The Triangle encompasses an astonishing number of state and local parks with thousands of acres of land available to area residents. Highlighted below are some of the most impressive parks in the area.

William B. Umstead State Park is located between Raleigh, Cary and Durham. It is the largest park in the region, with more than 5000 acres of nature trails along ridges and streams. Facilities are available for boating, fishing, camping and picknicking.

Eno River State Park is located in northwest Durham and includes parts of one of the oldest rivers on earth. The park encompasses 1600 acres and flows a 14 mile stretch of this wilderness river. Nature trails, camping, fishing, canoeing and rafting are available.

Lake Crabtree is a new 522 acre lake surrounded by 71 acres of park. No motorboats are allowed on the late, and Crabtree is the first in the nation to have a permanent one K kayak course with the potential for international competition.

Sarah P. Duke Memorial Gardens is located on Duke University's west campus and features 20 acres of formal and informal seasonal plantings, lily ponds, and 35 acres of pine forest and wildflower trails.

The Botanical Gardens has 300 acres of natural botanical gardens, which is the largest in the Southeast. Native plants are displayed by habitat, there is an extensive collection of carnivorous plants and two miles of wooded trails.

Sports

In addition to a multitude of participatory sports, the Triangle is a haven for spectator sports. In addition to local high school competition, the three major universities provide an exciting rivalry through Atlantic Coast Conference sports.

The Durham Bulls, a Class AA professional baseball team, is a minor league team for the Atlanta Braves. The Bulls were featured in the movie Bull Durham. The Carolina Mudcats, the AA farm team of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is based at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.

Charlotte, three hours to the west of the Triangle, hosts the Hornets, an NBA team, and the Carolina Panthers, an NFL team.

The Triangle's newest addition to professional sports is the Carolina Hurricanes, an NHL team.
